As a homeschooling mom I am always looking to find unique ways to teach my kids about our lesson plans. I either will create my own items or are looking for items while we are out. I find that the more fun I make it the more fun they have and the more they get involved in the lesson plans too. This year we are learning about Geopgraphy. I am introducing them to all the Continents, Oceans, Countries etc.
I have 2 big wall maps located in our classroom in which I use to show the States, Continents, Oceans and Countries. However I was looking for some unique ways to teach them instead of just pointing to a map. I have hands on maps for the states that my kids can use dry erase markers on but didn't have anything for the oceans and continents.
That was until we received the Globe Bear from Playful Critics. He is the cutest teddy bear ever and a perfect companion to our classroom.
The body of the bear is actually a plush globe that has all the continents located around it. On the front are North and South America. On the back is the Continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. On the bears bottom is the Continent of Antartica. The globe (bears body) is made of a plush blue fabric to symbolize the oceans. The Continents of North/South America, Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia are represented with green fabric. The continent of Antartica is represented with white fabric.
He has been a wonderful addition to our classroom and made learning extra fun. I use it to teach them about directions. Such as North is up to his head, South is down to his toes, West is to right and East is to his Left. They have caught on really quick using that has a fun game. Each week I introduce a new Continent on the Globe Bear in with one of our lesson plans. By the end of the week I test the children to see if they can find it on the bear. It has been a great tool because at the end of the week they have got it right!!
I will be introducing the oceans in the weeks to come as well. I have even noticed the kids carrying him around. From time to time they will ask him where he is taking them today and mention some of the continents. This is such a fun way to learn about our wonderful world. Another plus is that you can take him anywhere with you beings he is so soft and plush. Plus he is washable too.
I am so glad we were introduced to this adorable little guy and we love having him in our classroom.
