Safety Outside with Safety Sam #AD

#AD I am a mommy to 3 children and safety is always a top priority. Especially when they are playing outside. I homeschool my children so we spend a great deal of time outside playing etc. We were excited recently to have a friend arrive called #SafetySam and we were asked to create awareness around the importance of outdoor play safety, and the “Play It Forward Safety Campaign.”

Every year, thousands of children are hurt or die because a driver moving forward very slowly didn't see them. These Incidents for the most part take place in residential driveways or parking lots and are referred to as ‘frontovers’ (the opposite of a backover). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration January 2009 Report (DOT HS 811 085) states that ‘other’ (not a backover) non‐occupant non-traffic crashes are responsible for 393 deaths and 20,000 Injuries per year.

· The predominant age of victims is 12 ‐ 23 months old

· Over 80% of “frontover” incidents involved a larger size vehicle (truck, van, SUV)

· Tragically, in over 70% of these incidents, a parent or close relative is behind the wheel

I personally noticed cars in our neighborhood and local park driving very fast, even when children were present. I was excited to put Saftey Sam to the test. Much to my surprise, Safety Sam did a Great Job. The cars slowed down when they noticed him by the street. We will be using it everytime we are outside playing to ensure that my children are safe.
Here are some other talking points about safety:
